General Duties of Village Trustees

  

The concept of "checks and balances" is one of the major political doctrines which form the very foundation of the American system of government. The Village Trustee plays an important part.

 

Village Trustee roles are evidenced as follows:

 

GOVERNMENT

  1. Collector and distributor of statutory assessments.
  2. Guardian of the public records, public funds, and public property.

 

PROTECTION

  1. As custodian of village funds, the Trustee ensures that the taxpayer's money is managed according to state and village law.
  2. Provides internal audits of village government.
  3. Provides access to public records.
  4. Provides assistance to citizens in accessing public meetings.
  5. Processes and maintains documents to ensure that cases are handled in a timely manner.

 

ACCOUNTABILITY

  1. The position of Trustee is a organization that performs a wide range of record keeping, information management and financial management in the village government.
  2. With the magnitude of the impact the Trustee's duties have on the peoples' rights and property it is essential that the trustee be accountable for his/her actions.
  3. As custodian of all village funds, the trustees are subject to State General rules and regulations.
